What Is Basic Strategy in Blackjack?
Blackjack is one of the few casino games where player decisions meaningfully affect the outcome. Basic strategy is a mathematically derived set of rules that tells you the statistically optimal play for every possible hand combination against every dealer up-card. Following it consistently can reduce the house edge to under 0.5% in many games.
The Core Decisions in Blackjack
Every hand requires you to make one or more of the following decisions:
- Hit — Take another card
- Stand — Keep your current hand
- Double Down — Double your bet and receive exactly one more card
- Split — Divide a pair into two separate hands
- Surrender — Forfeit half your bet and end the hand (where available)
Key Basic Strategy Rules
Hard Totals (No Ace, or Ace Counted as 1)
- Hard 8 or less: Always hit
- Hard 9: Double if dealer shows 3–6; otherwise hit
- Hard 10–11: Double if your total exceeds the dealer's up-card; otherwise hit
- Hard 12–16: Stand if dealer shows 2–6 (bust cards); hit against 7 or higher
- Hard 17+: Always stand
Soft Totals (Ace Counted as 11)
- Soft 13–15: Hit (or double if dealer shows 4–6)
- Soft 16–18: Double against dealer 3–6; otherwise hit or stand at 18+
- Soft 19–21: Always stand
Pairs
- Always split: Aces and 8s
- Never split: 10s and 5s
- Split 9s against dealer 2–6, 8–9; stand against 7, 10, Ace
- Split 2s and 3s against dealer 2–7
Why Never Split 10s?
A pair of 10s gives you 20 — one of the strongest hands in blackjack. Splitting them turns one great hand into two mediocre starting points. The math overwhelmingly favours standing on 20.
How Game Rules Affect Strategy
Basic strategy is not one-size-fits-all. The optimal play can shift depending on:
| Rule Variation | Effect on House Edge |
|---|---|
| Dealer stands on soft 17 | Favourable (lower house edge) |
| Blackjack pays 6:5 (not 3:2) | Unfavourable (increases house edge) |
| Double after split allowed | Favourable |
| Surrender available | Favourable |
| More decks used | Slightly unfavourable |
Practice Before You Play
Basic strategy takes time to memorise. Many online casinos offer free-play blackjack — use it to drill your decisions until they become instinctive. Strategy cards are also widely available and are perfectly legal to use in most casinos.
Important Reminder
Even perfect basic strategy doesn't guarantee wins — the house edge, though small, still exists. Set a session budget, never bet more than you can afford to lose, and view blackjack as entertainment with a low cost of play.
